Improved access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene in healthcare facilities across Tajikistan is benefiting 1.8 million people, including nearly 900,000 children.
“We feel more confident. We know we are protecting our patients – and ourselves,” says Nasiba Abdulhojaeva, Chief of the Sarichashma Primary Healthcare Centre, highlighting the improvements in working conditions and patient safety.
Between 2021 and 2025, a €30 million initiative supported by the European Union targeted improvements in 1,537 healthcare facilities, including 1,500 primary healthcare centres. Additional climate-resilient upgrades to six rural centres have benefited 18,050 people, including 7,200 children. Improvements include reliable drinking water, handwashing facilities, safer waste management and alternative energy sources. The government has also committed to doubling public expenditure on water, sanitation and hygiene, supporting more sustainable and resilient healthcare nationwide.
