Get Your Free Food in My Neighborhood, More and More People Tell the Needy

A global movement that started in the United States has people setting up “pantries” in their neighborhood, to help residents provide the underprivileged with 24-hour access to free food and other necessities that they may not normally be able to afford.

The Little Free Pantry initiative’s founder, Jessica McClard, says that in the four years since launching, the project has grown to 670 recorded projects, though possibly three times more in reality. The project – with the motto “Feeding Neighbours, Nourishing Neighbourhoods” – has also gained the attention of anti-hunger organizations.

“We appreciate that (the project) not only supplements our efforts, but also helps to raise awareness about the issue of hunger in America,” says Zuani Villarreal, spokeswoman for Feeding America, a network of 200 food banks which distributed 4.3 billion meals last year.
