A Treatment That Slashes Heart Failure by 62 Percent

A new treatment for patients with heart failure reduces deaths by 62% and is currently being rolled out in various hospitals around the world.

“Heart failure is a silent killer, so this new way of treating patients is a total gamechanger that I never thought I’d see in my lifetime. It will save many lives and bring hope to so many families,” says Matthew Sunter, the lead heart failure nurse at St George’s Hospital in London.

A trial involving 87 hospitals in 14 countries determined that giving larger doses of relevant drugs within the first two weeks of treatment reduces deaths by 62% and lowers patients’ risks of ending up back in the hospital by 30%. With over one million people affected by heart failure in the United Kingdom alone, St George’s Hospital in London and Morriston Hospital in Swansea decided to implement the findings from the trial study to help over 600 patients collectively. A senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, Emily McGrath, notes that the treatment “looks hugely promising” as the United Kingdom works towards reducing avoidable deaths caused by its biggest killers: heart disease, stroke, cancer, and diabetes.
