Another Country Is Waving Goodbye to Coal

Slovenia is phasing out the production of coal throughout its territory by 2033, making it one of the last countries in the European Union to do so.

With this decision, Slovenia collects some $280 million from the European Union’s Just Transition Fund to help coal-impacted communities develop new and improve economies.

The fund will benefit the country’s two coal regions, Savinja-Šalek, which has the only remaining coal-fired power station and active coal mine, and Zasavje, where the mines and thermal plants are now no longer active.
