Another Country Joins the Single-Use Plastic “Ban” Wagon

From January 1, 2024, many single-use plastics have been banned in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The ban has been, or will soon be, imposed on both sellers and consumers and encompasses, among others, single-use food delivery packaging, plastic containers, plastic bottles, plastic straws, wet wipes, and balloons.

A two-year transition period has been established so that by January 1, 2025, many items will have already been prohibited. By January 1, 2026, all items listed under the ban will be strictly forbidden. An AED 200 dirham fine will be imposed for first-time new law violations. The fine will increase to AED 2,000 dirhams for repeat offenders. The decision comes in an effort to protect the environment and local flora and fauna. It encourages community members and corporations to adopt more sustainable approaches in their day-to-day lives. It will furthermore encourage the use of recycled products and biodegradable, non-toxic materials.
