Give Up Your Car and You Can Ride Trains and Buses for Free!

To reward citizens who give up their private vehicles for good, Barcelona, Spain, is issuing free, unlimited public transport passes valid for 3 years, a successful measure towards a healthier lifestyle and the reduction of air pollution in the city.

Since 2017, some 12,000 metropolitan tickets have been issued, meaning that 10,613 cars and 1,735 motorcycles were taken off circulation across the Metropolitan area. Among those, 66% were fueled by gasoline and 34% by diesel.

The T-verda ticket allows users to hop into any public transport service offered in Barcelona for a duration of three years. This measure came with the introduction of the Low Emissions Zones (LEZ) Rondas BCN which restricts the circulation of highly polluting vehicles from 7:00 to 20:00 during weekdays. In November 2020, when the LEZ came into force, more than 729 applications were submitted for a T-verda.
