Good News for Black Rhinos, as Their Numbers Grow One Baby at a Time

Conservationists are seeing a gradual growth in Africa’s population of black rhinos, giving a glimpse of hope in the protection measures taken for the endangered animals.

“While Africa’s rhinos are by no means safe from extinction, the continued slow recovery of Black Rhino populations is a testament to the immense efforts made in the countries the species occurs in, and a powerful reminder to the global community that conservation works,” says Grethel Aguilar, Acting Director General of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Reproduction efforts resulting in more babies and actions against poaching have both played a role in the increase in black rhino numbers. According to the IUCN, the population of black rhinos across sub-Saharan Africa have increased from 4,845 animals in 2012 to 5,630 in 2018, with the modest progression in numbers expected to continue for the next five years.
