This Brand New City in the Desert Will Run on Green Energy Only

As green hydrogen is a promising fuel alternative, Saudi Arabia intends to open a new plant, complete with a carbon-neutral city of a million residents.

Green hydrogen consists of the electrolysis of water, and the electricity used in the process comes from renewable sources like wind and solar. Green hydrogen can be put to work for anything, from transportation to industrial production. “The last 15% of the economy is hard to clean up – aviation, shipping, manufacturing, long-distance trucking… Green hydrogen can do that,” says Rachel Fakhry, an energy analyst for the Natural Resources Defense Council in New York, USA.

Currently the largest producer of oil, Saudi Arabia will create the new, net-zero city called Neom on the edge of the desert, where a green hydrogen plant powered by wind and solar energy will be built and used as the city’s main source of energy.
