Bye Bye Fossil Fuels, Hello Clean Energy

Renewable energy sources are becoming increasingly cheaper and more accessible, ultimately leading to a reduction in global fossil fuel reliance.

“We are on the cusp of a new era. Fossil fuels are running out of road. The sun is rising on a clean energy age,” says UN Secretary General António Guterres.

Thanks to global investments and the increasing use of sustainable energy sources, renewable energy prices have decreased. Globally, more than nine out of ten renewable power projects are cheaper than their fossil fuel counterparts. Solar power is considered approximately 41% more affordable than the lowest-cost fossil fuel alternative, while onshore wind generation is less than half the price of fossil fuels. Although more infrastructure investments are needed to ensure global access, current trends suggest that the world is moving toward renewables more than ever before. “The cost-competitiveness of renewables is today’s reality. New renewable power outcompetes fossil fuels on cost, offering a clear path to affordable, secure, and sustainable energy,” adds Francesco La Camera, the director general of IRENA.
