Village of Tiny Houses Becomes Home for Veterans Living on the Street

A first-of-its-kind Canadian village of affordable tiny homes in Forest Lawn, Calgary has opened its doors to 11 veterans this month, offering them the support, privacy and security they need to reintegrate into their community at a comfortable pace.

The Homes for Heroes Foundation and ATCO partnered to provide veterans with transitional housing in a village consisting of 15 tiny homes, a resource center, family suite, counsellor suite and community gardens.

Homes for Heroes Foundation president and co-founder Dave Howard explains that the village was up and ready within a few months of receiving the permit thanks to the community’s support, adding, “They’re the ones that volunteered, they’re the ones that donated the money, so without them we have nothing. Canadians truly appreciate our veterans and we thank them.”

“I expect this to end the issue of veterans experiencing homelessness and I think we can do that within a 12 to 13 year period,” he adds, as the foundation plans its next villages and building sites across the country.
