Concrete Step for a Cleaner Cement Industry

The state of California, United States, has passed its most progressive law regarding carbon emissions produced by the cement industry, a concrete step towards achieving its climate goals.

“California is now the leader in driving decarbonization of the cement industry,” says state Senator Josh Becker, lead sponsor of the legislation. For the first time, the state imposes specific reductions to an economic sector.

The SB 596 law requires a 40% reduction of carbon emissions per ton of cement produced by 2035 and requests the California Air Resources Board to develop a strategy for the cement industry to reach net-zero emissions by 2045, a goal approved by the state’s cement manufacturers.
