Cancer Survival Rate Sees Upward Trend in This Country

The overall survival rate for Japanese cancer patients has been going up since 2016, with the latest study showing a 10-year survival rate of 58.9% – a testimony to the importance of early detection and early treatment.

Prostate cancer has the highest survival rate with 99.2%. Female breast cancer follows with 87.5%. As for colorectal cancer and stomach cancer, survival rates are at 69.7% and 67.3% respectively.

The study was led by the National Cancer Center Japan and targeted 121,000 people, and the results show a continuing increase in survival rates since the first results of the study were released in 2016. The study also emphasizes how early detection and treatment is key to overcoming cancer: When caught at Stage 1, the 10-year survival rate is exponentially higher than at Stage 4: for Stage 1 gastric cancer, for example, the rate is at 90.3% compared with 5.8% for Stage 4.
