EnvironmentHealth FranceCity of Lights Prioritizes Air Quality
Air quality has improved across Paris and Île-de-France, according to 2024 statistics.
Environmental regulations put in place by the local, national, and European levels have signifcantly reduced air pollutants in the Paris region.
Île-de-France has experienced a downhill trend in two major air pollutants since 2005: fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), decreasing by 55 per cent and 50 per cent, respectively. Premature deaths linked to air pollution have also fallen by a third between 2010 and 2019. Though the Île-de-France region still experiences high levels of air pollution, particularly around major traffic routes, local policies on vehicles, heating, and energy reveal a positive environmental and health trend. Should additional measures be taken, France may be on track to reach the World Health Organization’s air quality standards nationwide by 2030.
