Court Ruling Safeguards One of the World’s Richest Marine Ecosystems

Chile has permanently rejected a major mining and port project, protecting a globally significant marine reserve that is home to most of the world’s Humboldt penguins.

“The institutions work, and this project is definitely discarded,” said Maisa Rojas, Chile’s Minister of Environment.

The proposed $2.5 billion project would have affected an ecosystem that hosts over 560 marine species, including approximately 80% of the global Humboldt penguin population. Increased shipping, pollution and habitat disruption were key concerns. The ruling confirms earlier government decisions and sets a strong precedent for aligning economic development with biodiversity protection, reinforcing Chile’s role as a global steward of marine ecosystems.
