Domestic Violence Protections Skyrocket Across the World

In recent years, legal protections against domestic violence have become the global norm.

By 2023, statistics show that 9 in 10 people were living in countries with legal measures combatting domestic violence in place, a major increase compared to previous decades.

Until the 1990s, less than 1% of countries had legal protections against domestic violence in place – Canada, Sweden, and Ireland being the only three to have such safeguards. Three decades later, the trend has entirely reversed. This major shift highlights the increased global recognition of domestic violence in households, particularly against women. Advocating for the criminalization of domestic violence and ensuring gender equality go hand in hand.
