The Same Oil We Use in Our Food Can Now Fuel up an Airplane!

As part of the global efforts to make air transport more environmentally friendly, Air France debuted its first-ever long-haul flight to run on a mixture of kerosene and edible oil, flying from Paris, France, to Montreal, Canada.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is produced from biomass such as used edible oils from waste and residues. A mixture of 16% biofuel and kerosene could potentially help save up to 20 tons of CO2 emissions per flight.

Air France-KLM joined forces with the energy company Total, the aircraft manufacturer Airbus and the airport operator ADF to come up with techniques to make the industry consume less fossil fuel sources of energy. France wishes to increase the SAF share to 1% of total fuel consumption. By 2025, this share will be set to 2%, and by 2030, to 5%.
