New energy vehicles accounted for more than 60% of monthly vehicle sales for the first time in July, marking a major shift towards cleaner transport in China.
“For every three new cars sold, two are new energy vehicles,” the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers reported, reflecting the rapid expansion of electric and other new energy models in the passenger-car market.
New energy vehicles surpassed 50% of cumulative vehicle sales for the first time in 2026, covering passenger and commercial vehicles as well as domestic sales and exports. Their share of domestic passenger-vehicle sales reached 68.1% in July, while new energy commercial-vehicle sales grew nearly 50% year on year. More than half of vehicle exports were also new energy models for two consecutive months. Supporting the transition, the country now has 23.06 million charging points, including more than 180,000 high-power chargers, and plans to expand charging infrastructure to more than 40 million units by 2030.
