Final Ebola Patient Recovers, Marking Major Health Victory

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the last Ebola patient was discharged on 19 October 2025, just six weeks after the outbreak was declared, marking a decisive step toward officially ending the epidemic. The recovery begins a 42-day countdown to declaring the outbreak over if no new cases emerge.

“The recovery of the last patient just six weeks after the outbreak was declared is a remarkable achievement that shows how strong partnership, national expertise and determination have contributed to overcoming challenges to save and protect lives,” said Dr Mohamed Janabi, WHO Regional Director for Africa.

Since September, 64 cases were identified in Kasai Province, with 19 patients recovering and more than 35,000 people vaccinated. A 32-bed treatment centre was built in record time, even in a remote area with poor infrastructure. With no new cases since late September and continued on-the-ground vigilance, the country is on track to officially declare the outbreak over in early December — an inspiring example of rapid coordination and medical resilience.
