Finally, This Famous Metro Hires Women Drivers

For the first time in its history, the famous Moscow metro now hires female drivers since the profession is no longer deemed harmful to women’s health.

According to the Moscow transport department, with the automation of mechanical processes, operating trains is no longer “associated with heavy physical exertion.” Consequently, “the first female electric train drivers in modern history started working for the Moscow metro.”

Among the professions women were not allowed to have according to the 2000 register, there was bus driver, sailor, parachutist, auto mechanic, but also mining and metalworking. Russian authorities made changes to the legislation regarding professions exclusively reserved for men, reducing the number from 456 to around 100. Russian Railways will start hiring women to drive trains, meaning that in 2021, Russian women will be able to drive on rails underground and overground.
