Free Breakfast and Lunch for All School Kids

All school children across the state of Minnesota, United States will have access to free breakfast and lunch, regardless of their parent’s income, to ensure that all kids have a healthy start in life.

“As a former teacher, I know that providing free breakfast and lunch for our students is one of the best investments we can make to lower costs, support Minnesota’s working families, and care for our young learners and the future of our state,” explains governor Tim Walz. “This bill puts us one step closer to making Minnesota the best state for kids to grow up, and I am grateful to all of the legislators and advocates for making it happen.”

According to the nonprofit group Hunger Solutions Minnesota, one in four children doesn’t qualify for support. The state’s authorities are fixing this problem by picking up the tab and covering for everyone who doesn’t qualify for free and reduced-price meals. They will allocate $338 million over the next two-year budget to school children – from kindergarten to 12^th grade – to be properly fed. The program should be operational in July, in time for summer school. The states of California, Maine, and Colorado have taken similar steps to feed school kids.
