6 Billion Dollars Help Poor Countries Fight Climate Crisis

The Green Climate Fund (GCF) has received around $6 billion worth of new pledges from five nations to support the needs of developing countries vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.

The official pledging conference will take place at the end of October, with several countries already vowing to double their initial contributions to the UN-backed global fund.

Yannick Glemarec, the fund’s executive director, said that this doubling of contributions is “vital to support developing countries to raise and realise climate ambitions” in a statement after the G7 summit.

GCF’s first fundraising attempt in 2014 received pledges of more than $10 billion. To date, the GCF has allocated over $5.2 billion to 111 climate projects in 99 countries in support of clean energy and climate-resilient solutions.

From eco-friendly farming by Ghanaian women to forest restoration in Honduras and maintaining clean drinking water in the Marshall Islands, the Green Climate Fund aims to restrict greenhouse gas emissions and meet environmental global goals through international assistance.
