Great Green Wall Helps Restore Land in North Africa

A consortium of countries and development banks have pledged $14 billion over the next four years for the creation of a Great Green Wall to halt the desertification of the Sahel region in North Africa.

“That’s 100 million hectares restored, 10 million jobs created, 250 million tons of carbon captured,” said French President Emmanuel Macron during an international biodiversity summit held in Paris.

The original target of $10 billion has been exceeded, and the African Bank for Development has promised $6.5 billion out of the $14.32 billion needed for this project where trees and grasslands will be planted along the 8,000 km from the Atlantic to the Red Sea in order to create sustainable ecosystems.
