Environment EuropeGreenhouse Gas Emissions Keep on Dropping!
Across Europe, greenhouse gas emissions decreased by 4% in the first quarter of 2024 compared with the same quarter of 2023, with electricity and gas supply and household accounts for the most considerable reductions.
In the first quarter of 2024, greenhouse gas emissions were estimated at 894 million tons of CO2-equivalents (CO2-eq), compared with 931 million tons of CO2-eq in the first quarter of 2023.
During that period, there has been a decline in greenhouse gas emissions in 20 European countries, with Bulgaria and Germany having the most significant reductions with 15.2% and 6.7% respectively. Eight European countries – Austria, Czechia, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands – have declined their gross domestic product (GDP). The remaining 12 countries – Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark, France, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, and Sweden – managed to decrease emissions while growing their GDP.
