Wetlands Revival Shows Unexpected Climate Power

Restoring Florida’s Everglades in the United States is now proving to be a powerful natural climate solution, capturing vast amounts of carbon while reviving one of the world’s most unique ecosystems.

“It’s almost like an investment in your retirement fund. Over time, the benefits emerge, and they are more than the sum of their parts,” said John Kominoski, Florida International University professor, emphasising how restoration delivers growing long-term benefits.

New research finds the Everglades absorbs around 14 million tons of carbon dioxide each year, roughly equal to 10% of emissions from Florida’s road traffic. While methane emissions from wetlands complicate the overall climate balance, scientists say the ecosystem still plays a significant role in reducing net greenhouse gases. As one of the largest restoration projects in the world, the Everglades highlights how protecting and rebuilding natural systems can simultaneously boost biodiversity, strengthen climate resilience, and contribute meaningfully to global emission reduction efforts.
