Grizzly Bear Now Safe From Harm

Hunting grizzly bears has been outlawed in British Colombia, Canada, a decision that comes within the scope of a larger provincial effort to protect the mighty northern animal.

“It is no longer socially acceptable to the vast majority of British Columbians to hunt grizzly bears,” says British Colombia Forests Minister Doug Donaldson. “That’s the message.”

The ban is effective immediately, except for First Nations, indigenous groups who, according to treaty rights, are allowed to hunt for food, social and ceremonial reasons. Earlier in 2021, the province announced a ban on trophy hunting. British Colombia is home to some 15,000 grizzly bears, and to maintain this sustainable population, a more robust wildlife management strategy will be developed to prevent, among other things, habitat loss. According to the Environment Minister of British Colombia, bear viewing generates more revenue and jobs than hunting alone.
