Society USAGun Violence Sees Its Sharpest Decline in Six Years
Data from 2023 has shown one of the most significant single-year murder rate declines in the United States’ history, with violent crimes and gun violence continuing to drop in 2024.
In the 300 most populated American cities, year-to-date gun violence homicides are down 14.7% compared with 2023; 2024 has seen the smallest summer surge in gun violence victimization rates since 2018, from 38% to 25.7%.
The FBI released its full-year National Incident-Based Reporting System data for 2023, which doesn’t include data from 2024. However, according to the Center for American Progress, violent crime and gun violence are most likely to continue to drop in 2024. This trend is supported by the FBI’s first-quarter report on violent crime, data from 227 major American cities, and an August 2024 report from the Major Cities Chiefs Association.
