Society MexicoHere, Crime Rates Hit Record Lows
2023 marked a record-low year for homicide rates and other crimes across Mexico, according to preliminary data published by the national statistics agency INEGI.
“We continue with the actions of prevention, prosecution, and attention to feminicidal violence. It must be said that we have continued working with the women’s institutions of the states, as well as the state prosecutors so that there is no impunity,” says Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Rosa Icela Rodríguez.
Compared to December 2018, Mexico has registered an 18 per cent decrease in intentional homicides for the 2023 calendar year, with the majority of the victims being male. According to the data, rates for theft, kidnappings, and feminicide have also decreased. However, respective crime rates vary pretty drastically depending on region, with Yucatán and Baja California Sur recording some of the lowest levels across all categories and Guanajuato and México State recording some of the highest crime and homicide levels.
