Environment European UnionHere, the Largest Drop in Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Decades
Greenhouse gas output within the European Union dropped by a staggering 8.3 per cent in 2023.
“We are on track to meet our 2030 targets to reduce emissions by at least 55 percent if this momentum is maintained,” says European Commission spokesperson, Tim McPhie.
The 2024 Climate Action Progress Report reveals that greenhouse gas emissions dropped more in 2023 than any other year in the last several decades, excluding the COVID-19 pandemic year of 2020. In other words, the report revealed a 37 per cent decrease in emissions compared to the levels recorded in the 1990s. The main driver in decreased emissions remains the renewable energy sector, which accounted for 44.7 per cent of the EU’s electricity in 2023. Lower-carbon heating systems and dwindling industrial output also positively continued the drop across the bloc.
