Historic Shift in Electric Car Sales

For the first time in Australia’s history, electric vehicle sales have surpassed the fossil-fueled ones in the medium-sized car category during the first quarter of 2023, a 50% increase compared with the previous quarter.

“We encourage political parties to work together to put all Australians in the best possible position to adopt low- and zero-emissions technologies that best suit their lifestyles, household budgets, and consumer needs,” states Michael Bradley from the Australian Automobile Association (AAA).

According to AAA, from January to March 2023, the sales of electric medium-sized cars reached 7,866, accounting for 58.3% of sales in the medium-sized category. In all categories, the number of conventional petrol hybrids reached 16,101 during 2023’s first quarter. In comparison, a total of 17,396 battery-electric vehicles were sold during that same period, a national first. In the previous quarter – from October to December 2022 – a total of 11,639 battery-electric vehicles were sold, across all categories.
