Stuff Old Clothes into this Machine, Get New Clothes after 5 Hours

The Swedish giant retailer H&M has developed ‘looop’, the world’s first in-store machine that disassembles old clothes and assembles new ones in about five hours, using neither water nor chemicals.

Developed by the Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel and the non-profit H&M Foundation, the recycling system is fed unwanted garment which is then cleaned with ozone, shredded, and spun into yarn.

“We must innovate materials and processes while inspiring customers to keep their garments in use for as long as possible,” says Pascal Brun, head of sustainability at H&M, which plans to have all its materials either recycled or more sustainably sourced by 2030.

“We are constantly exploring new technology and innovations to help transform the fashion industry as we are working to reduce the dependency on virgin resources,” adds Burn. “Getting customers on board is key to achieve real change and we are so excited to see what ‘looop’ will inspire.”
