Officially Coal-Free, Six Years Early!

Slovakia is set to become coal-free this year, six years earlier than its original goal of 2030.

The Eastern European country officially ended production at its last coal-fired power plant and will now source from nuclear and renewable energy. By June 2024, Slovakia expects 100 percent of its generated electricity to be free of CO2.

Slovakia plans to transform closed power plants into solar parks or other sustainable options. It will also clean up power plants’ landfills so they do not pose further environmental risks. Slovakia joins Belgium, Austria, Sweden, and Portugal as a coal-free country.
