From Food to Fashion: This Year’s Awards Season Go Green

Hollywood awards shows have not been so eco-friendly in the past, but this season seems to have taken an environmentally conscious turn: from food to fashion, the Hollywood community has taken major steps forward towards sustainability.

Most of the major award shows have chosen to serve a plant-based menu this year, and many of the stars have decided to walk the red carpet wearing more sustainable looks. Online thrift store thredUP had even encouraged people to consider rewearing outfits to this year’s Oscars, for the sake of the planet – and many stars did just that.

“It’s gorgeous and it fits…so why not wear it again?!” writes star Elizabeth Banks who rewore a 2004 dress. “Proud to wear my @badgleymischka dress that I first wore to @vanityfair #oscars party in 2004, re-imagined with @wendiandnicole, to bring global awareness to the importance of sustainability in fashion and consumerism as it relates to climate change, production & consumption, ocean pollution, labor & women.”

Joaquin Phenix, winner of many Best Actor awards for his The Joker performance, wore the same tuxedo – designed by sustainable fashion designer Stella McCartney – throughout the 2020 awards season. McCartney proudly tweeted after the suit’s debut at the Golden Globes, “This man is a winner… wearing custom Stella because he chooses to make choices for the future of the planet. He has also chosen to wear this same tux for the entire award season to reduce waste.”
