HeroesHollywood Star Cate Blanchett Wants Rights for Stateless People
Cate Blanchett attended a major intergovernmental meeting in Geneva, Switzerland this month in a drive to end the “heartbreaking” plight of statelessness, which affects an estimated fifteen million people.
Stateless people, being without nationality, are usually denied education, medical care, travel, bank accounts, marriage and even death certificates.
The film star showed her own passport, credit card and insurance card, asking officials to imagine how difficult life would be were they to have no documents, denying them their basic human rights.
Blanchett explained that solutions to statelessness are not difficult to achieve, adding, “It is a man-made problem and it is solvable.”
