Animals UgandaIconic Species Return Sparks Major Conservation Comeback
White rhinos were reintroduced to the Ajai Wildlife Reserve in 2026, restoring a locally extinct species in Uganda and strengthening biodiversity recovery, while creating new opportunities for sustainable ecotourism.
“The return of these majestic animals represents a turning point in safeguarding Uganda’s rich biodiversity,” said the Uganda Wildlife Authority, which led the reintroduction programme.
The species vanished from the reserve during the 1970s and 1980s due to poaching and instability, but has now been restored through carefully monitored translocations supported by breeding programmes. Rhinos, considered keystone grazers, help maintain balanced grassland ecosystems that support diverse wildlife. The initiative also aims to revitalise tourism in the West Nile region, create local jobs and promote conservation awareness, while forming part of a wider national strategy to restore lost wildlife and protect habitats for future generations.
