300,000 Migrant Workers May Soon Rent Affordable Homes Next to Their Jobs

The coronavirus lockdowns left many of India’s migrant workers jobless and stranded. In hopes to improve the situation, the nation is now planning to develop affordable rental housing in the cities where the laborers work.

Part of the Housing for All scheme which aims to provide affordable housing to everyone by 2022, the project will transform vacant government housing into affordable rental housing complexes (ARHCs).

“The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in massive reverse migration of workers and urban poor who come from rural areas or small towns seeking better employment opportunities in urban areas,” says Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in a statement. “ARHCs will create a new ecosystem in urban areas making housing available at affordable rent close to the place of work.”

Initially announced as part of a coronavirus stimulus package, the plan will benefit at least 300,000 workers, and includes offers for subsidized loans, tax incentives and increased floor space allowances to developers.
