Japan Wants to Be Carbon-Neutral by 2050 – and Still Grow Its Economy

Japan is the latest country to vow to be carbon neutral by 2050, the same deadline as the European Union. The country will focus on new solar cells and carbon recycling to achieve its goal.

“Responding to climate change is no longer a constraint on economic growth,” says Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga who took office last month. “I declare we will aim to realize a decarbonized society.”

Indeed, according to the International Energy Agency, economic growth has been disconnected from greenhouse gas emissions since 2015. More than 60 countries are trying to be carbon neutral by 2050 to avoid the most catastrophic consequences of climate change.
