London Homes Feel the Heat of the Underground to Cut Carbon

Danish company Ramboll is engineering a heating network that will use unwanted heat from London Underground’s Northern Line to provide a sustainable, low-cost means to warm up homes and businesses in north London’s borough of Islington.

Ramboll says that the project will be the first in Europe to deliver an affordable, low carbon heat source using recycled waste from a metro line.

Lily Frencham, head of operations at the Association for Decentralised Agency, tells CNN, “Using surplus heat rather than wasting it is a great way to ensure that we cut carbon emissions whilst helping people stay warm at an affordable cost.”
