Although Mexican entrepreneurs Adrián López Velarde and Marte Cázarez are not the first to produce vegan leather, a key factor puts them at the top: their cactus leather is completely plastic-free, making the material both animal and environment-friendly.
Desserto, the brand name for the cactus leather, debuted last month at the International Leather Fair Lineapelle 2019 in Milan, Italy as the very first cactus-based cruelty-free leather on the market. The organic material was created in an effort to fight the plastic pollution crisis, and paves the way to a significantly more sustainable vegan leather industry.
“It’s the right time to offer this alternative, because not only are consumer industries interested in new materials like these, but also more and more end-consumers are demanding environmentally friendly materials,” says López Velarde to Fashion United.
