Women in Politics: This Country Is All About Gender Parity!

Mexican women made a giant leap forward since the country became the very first to enshrine in its constitution gender parity in all political races, and the most recent governors’ election has proven to help women shatter political glass ceilings.

“Each woman thinks, fundamentally, that if there is more space for women in politics, then there is more space for me,” explains one woman senator.

In 2019, the “parity in everything” reform – which championed gender parity for all candidates for elected office, as well as top posts in the executive and judicial branches – was adopted unanimously following the 2018’s Congress elections where women won half the seats. Gender equality is a constitutional principle equal to other constitutional principles, meaning that each party must nominate men and in “equality of conditions” and that the [40%] quota needed to be filled “without exception.”
