Over the past decade, efforts to support pastoral communities in the Sahel region of Africa have strengthened food security and economic resilience.
Pastoralism sustains over 20 million people, contributing 15% of the region’s GDP while fostering peace and stability. Protecting this age-old practice remains crucial, and the Regional Sahel Pastoralism Support Project (PRAPS) has made significant progress in this effort.
As of November 2024, PRAPS – designed to support the Nouakchott Declaration adopted in 2013 – has trained 137 veterinarians, established 415 vaccination parks, and vaccinated over 600 million animals, effectively reducing disease-related losses and enhancing herd productivity. It has also implemented sustainable management practices over 13 million hectares, secured 4,200 km of transhumance corridors and built 559 water points to improve access for communities and livestock. PRAPS efforts have empowered nearly 56,000 individuals – 86% women – allowing them to diversify their income and boost economic stability through better market access, infrastructure, and credit opportunities.
