Board Game News: Ms Monopoly Celebrates Women’s Inventions

Board game company Hasbro has created a new version of their popular Monopoly in a drive to promote women empowerment, switching real-estate properties with inventions made by women.

The original Monopoly mascot is replaced for the very first time by his investor niece, Ms Monopoly, and the new game comes in after another recent female-oriented invention, “Who’s She?”, that encourages children to learn more about famous women.

“We want to recognise and celebrate the many contributions women have made to our society and continue to make on a daily basis,” said Hasbro spokeswoman Jen Boswinkel.

All players have a chance of winning the game, even with the new payout rules that turns the real-world gender gap upside down: female players will start off with more Monopoly money than males and earn more every time they pass Go.

Hasbro, who noted only 10% of patented inventions were by women, celebrated the launch by donating thousands of dollars to young female entrepreneurs, on creations such as a device that detects lead in drinking water and another detecting sinkholes before they form.
