Twibber Stories Greece5. March 2020

My Friend is my Twibber Hero!

My friend and former journalist colleague Andreas Tölke recently visited the refugee camp Moria on Lesbos and met a four-year-old girl who was seriously injured in a bomb attack in Syria.

Medical care in Greece is no longer available for refugees who arrived after July 2019, and without emergency surgery, she would be deaf. After reading Andreas’ story I felt like I knew this little girl. I decided to collect money for my birthday on Facebook to help cover the cost of the surgery and the family’s accommodation in Athens.

Especially when it comes to fundraising, Facebook truly is connecting people. I was a very happy birthday-boy: 571 euros have been collected; even more from friends outside of Facebook. A relatively small sum, but every euro helps. Andreas meanwhile collected more than 7,000 euros. He is my Twibber hero, because through his Be an Angel association in Berlin, he also helps refugees with German bureaucracy, helps those in need find flats, etc. He also created a restaurant called Kreuzberger Himmel, where refugees cook and serve. A beautiful story that shows: A small personal initiative can make a big impact.
