New House Builds Will Include Solar Panels

Under a new national plan, all new-build homes in the United Kingdom will be legally required to install solar panels on the roofs by 2027.

“We have always been clear that we want solar panels on as many new homes as possible because they are a vital technology to help cut bills for families, boost our national energy security, and help deliver net zero,” says a United Kingdom government spokesperson.

The solar panel plan will help the United Kingdom decarbonize its electric grid and move towards net zero. Though the initial installation will cost between £3,000 and £4,000, homeowners can expect to save more than £1,000 yearly on energy bills. The new plan is only set to target new-home builds, but ideas about offering government-funded loans and grants to install solar panels on existing homes are in the works. “Through the Future Homes Standard, we plan to maximize the installation of solar panels on new homes as part of our ambition to ensure all new homes are energy efficient,” adds the government spokesperson.
