Green Energy is Breaking Records – and Becoming the Cheapest Form of Electricity

Last year saw a record-breaking three-quarters of new electricity around the globe using green energy. And new data has also revealed another record: green technologies now provide over a third of the world’s power!

In two-thirds of the world, solar and wind power have now become the cheapest form of electricity.

“Renewable energy is a cost-effective source of new power that insulates power markets and consumers from volatility,” says Francesco La Camera, director general of the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena), which provided the new data.

The agency is urging governments to use coronavirus bailouts to help boost green energy even further and double the annual investments in renewables over the next decade, in order to meet climate emergency needs.
