New Reserve Protects One of the World’s Rarest Primates

A new 3,182-hectare forest reserve will protect the critically endangered Delacour’s langur and its limestone habitat while supporting ecological restoration in Vietnam.

The reserve will also monitor langur populations, strengthen international conservation cooperation and support local livelihoods, combining species protection with community participation.

The Kim Bang conservation area includes more than 1,800 hectares under strict protection and nearly 1,400 hectares designated for ecological restoration. Found only in Vietnam, the Delacour’s langur is one of the world’s rarest primates and is classified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List following habitat loss and hunting pressure. Management will encompass forest restoration, wildfire prevention, scientific research and wildlife monitoring, while encouraging local participation and developing ecotourism linked to biodiversity protection. The reserve is also intended to improve forest quality and preserve the wider limestone mountain ecosystem and its other endemic, endangered and rare species.
