Animals IndiaRare Deer Population More Than Doubles
India’s endangered Hangul deer population has more than doubled since 2008, reaching 323 animals in the latest census as conservation efforts help the rare species recover.
The Wildlife Trust of India’s Hangul Recovery Project has identified potential habitats and mapped movement corridors connecting Dachigam National Park with surrounding landscapes, supporting efforts to secure the species’ long-term survival.
The population has increased by 154%, rising from 127 animals in 2008 to 289 in 2023 and 323 in 2025. Conservation measures have focused on protecting the Hangul, also known as the Kashmir stag, in its remaining habitats. A dedicated breeding centre at Tral is also being prepared to support recovery efforts. Conservationists are working with wildlife authorities and local communities to safeguard movement corridors across five districts, helping the deer move safely between habitats and supporting the continued recovery of one of India’s rarest deer species.
