According to a newly released report, as of the end of 2023, massive investments led to saving 65 million lives and cutting the combined death rate from AIDS, tuberculosis (TB), and malaria by 61% since 2002.
In 2023 alone, 25 million people were taking antiretroviral therapy to fight HIV, 7.1 million people received treatment against TB, and 227 million mosquito nets were distributed worldwide.
Critical investments in the fight against AIDS, TB, and malaria have freed up resources and capacities, thus helping countries better respond to other illnesses — existing and emerging — like cholera, Ebola, and mpox. For example, investments in HIV freed up 1.7 billion HIV-related hospitalization days, averted 1.4 billion outpatient visits, and generated $85 billion in cost savings. Financial aid allows governments to expand interventions and invest in other critical areas.
