Good News for Our Planet: Ozone Layer Back on Track to Recovery

Data from late 2019 and early 2020 has shown that ozone-depleting emissions called chlorofluorocarbon-11 (CFC-11) appear to have halted, which means the ozone layer’s full recovery should be completed on time!

“It’s a good news story. It’s absolutely fantastic that [CFC-11 emissions] are going down again, we’re extremely happy about that, says Paul Krummel from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation. “It’s around 2075 to 2080 that the ozone layer will return to pre-1980 levels.”

Implemented in 1987 to phase out substances that destroy the ozone layer – which absorbs ultraviolet radiation coming into our planet from the sun – the Montreal Protocol remains the most effective international treaty to restore the ozone layer and tackle climate change since “most of these chemicals [such as CFCs] that have been regulated or banned are actually extremely potent greenhouse gases as well,” as Mr. Krummel highlights.
