Society The WorldPast Year Brings More Food, More Security to the World
Global food security improved in 2024 amid a strong year overall for food production.
Many staple crops, such as rice, wheat, and soybean reached production highs, with predictions estimating that 313 million fewer people in the world’s most vulnerable countries were food insecure in 2024.
The data also suggests that quite a few fruits, including pears, cherries, and lemons, are on track for record production, while others, such as oranges and apples, remain at a stable production level as in previous years. It is also significant that the yield of many staples came out to be slightly higher this year than in previous years, a trend that ultimately leads to less amount of land being needed to produce the same amount of food. Despite climate shifts, 2024 proves to be a positive year for global food production trends – something that will hopefully be carried through into 2025.
