Policies Change So Native Trees Stay Firmly Grounded

Following half a century of forest activism, Western Australia’s native forests will be fully protected against logging, preventing native vegetal species from being torn down, in an unprecedented decision in Australian environmental history.

“We’re going to stop logging in our native forests… to preserve these beautiful, magnificent, wonderful areas for future generations of West Australians,” says WA Premier Mark McGowan.

The change in the state’s policy is bound to come into effect by 2024, thus protecting tingle, jarrah, karri, marri, tuart, and wandoo forests — endemic vegetal species and therefore threatened — in one of Australia’s most diverse natural environments located some 300 km south-west of Perth. An area covering 400,000 hectares of unique native forest will be preserved.
